Abstract

Work and family balance can be examined from different angles, be it Philosophy, Psychology, Politics or Sociology, but in all of them there is a common topic: shared time. This is a moment in history when everything takes places in a hurry, when time is a seen as a commodity and everyone’s dayly routine is organised around the work timetable. Therefore, it is neccesary to develop strategies and cultivate values to not only balance work and family, but also to favour personal growth. From this point of view, work and family balance would be in the field of Ethics and it becomes something that can be taught and learnt.

The articles collected in this book show that, besides the neccesary application of appropriate public policies, balancing work and family implies learning to manage shared spaces and individual times, as well as being aware that balancing the different aspects of our life is, basically, a matter of a values scale.

New publication in Higher Education Research & Development

HERDThe article “The state of ethical learning of students in the Spanish university system: considerations for the European higher education area”, written by Maria Rosa Buxarrais, Francisco Esteban and Teodor Mellen, has been published online in the journal Higher Education Research & Development (ISSN of online version: 1469-8366).

Abstract:

With the establishment of the European higher education area (EHEA), the ethical learning of students is a matter of central importance in European universities. This paper examines the current state of ethical learning of students in the Spanish university system. We present the results of a descriptive survey, which used a training model for university students and examined their ethical development in three categories: the construction of self, learning in fellowship and socio-moral reflection. The results of the survey reflect the current situation of ethical training among Spanish students and enable us to propose certain measures for consolidating and enhancing ethical development with the Spanish universities of the EHEA.

Keynote at the 10th International Conference on Education in values at Hidalgo State (México)

Hidalgo2014Last 2nd of October, María Rosa Buxarrais gave a keynote at the 10th International Conference on Values Education at the State of Hidalgo (México). This year, the title of the conference was “Values for a Peaceful, Democratic and Harmonic Coexistence in Educational Centres”. The conference, that lasted until the 4th of October, had venues in the following municipalities: Pachuca, Tepeji del Río, Actopan, El Arenal, Huasca de Ocampo, Mineral del Monte and Omitlan de Juárez. Specialists in values education from Guatemala, Argentina, Chile, Spain, Costa Rica and Mexico took part in this event.

The title of Buxarrais’ paper was “Managing emtions and feelings in education in values education: the care approach”. The seminar dealt with how to manage feelings and emotions, taking into account that they have an influence on the construction of the scale of values of each person. Based on the distinction between emotion and reason and that between feelings and emotions, an objective for values education is proposed: an ethics of care. Thanks to this model, we can understand that the world is formed by a network of relationships between people where certain values have priority, such as care, responsibility, gratitude and autonomy.
